Understanding the System

What is a Regional Center?

California's regional centers are nonprofit private corporations that contract with the state to provide services and supports to individuals with developmental disabilities.

There are 21 regional centers throughout California, each serving a specific geographic area. They are funded by the state Department of Developmental Services (DDS) and are responsible for coordinating services for individuals with developmental disabilities and their families.

Regional centers assess needs, develop Individual Program Plans (IPPs), and help connect individuals with community resources, service providers, and funding options — including the Self-Determination Program.

Find Your Regional Center

Visit dds.ca.gov/rc/rcmap to locate the regional center that serves your area.

Who Regional Centers Serve

  • Individuals with intellectual disabilities
  • Individuals with cerebral palsy
  • Individuals with epilepsy
  • Individuals with autism spectrum disorder
  • Individuals with conditions similar to intellectual disabilities
  • Individuals at risk of having a child with a developmental disability

Individual Program Plan (IPP)

The IPP is a written plan developed by the regional center and the individual/family. It identifies the person's needs, goals, and the services needed to achieve those goals. Fit Fast programs can align with IPP objectives related to physical health, social skills, community participation, and independence.

Key SDP Benefits

More control over your services

  • Choose your own service providers
  • Decide how to spend your budget
  • Greater flexibility in scheduling
  • More personalized support options
  • Freedom to try new services
  • Direct control over hiring and firing providers
Self-Determination Program

What is the SDP?

The Self-Determination Program gives individuals and families more freedom to design their own support system.

Instead of the regional center directly arranging services, SDP participants receive an individualized budget. You decide which services to purchase, which providers to work with, and how to structure your schedule.

Fit Fast Adaptive Fitness is designed to fit within the SDP framework. Our adaptive fitness, social recreation, and community integration programs can be purchased using SDP funds — giving families the flexibility to choose services that truly meet their needs.
